History of Big Bear Lake

In 1845, Benjamin Wilson was on an expedition to the Mohave River. When he passed through the San Bernardino Mountain range he accidentally discovered the mountain resort now called Big Bear. The name was not always Big Bear though. It was originally named Bear Valley. The name was made because of the many grizzly that roamed the area. The area was full with animals. Grizzly bears, beavers, birds, and many other animals attracted more and more people to Bear Valley for gaming. Little time passed and gold was discovered in nearby mountains. This triggered a small gold rush in the Bear Valley. Enough prospectors came to Bear Valley in the hunt for gold and silver ore the Bear Valley Mining District was founded.
